Some refractory metals include tungsten, niobium, tantalum, rhenium, molybdenum, etc. Powder processing methods fabricate these metals. Most common refractory materials include magnesium oxide, silicon carbide, and fused or vitreous silica.

Some essential properties of refractories include the degree of expansion on heating, thermal conductivity, and specific heat capacity.

2. Types of Industrial Furnaces


A refinery is a typical industrial facility that involves processing and operation units to refine certain materials or convert raw materials into a product. An industrial furnace is an essential piece of equipment in the refinery processing plant. This firing provides the heat required for the process, while the heat comes from the combustion of fuels.

Glass Melting

This industry involves the use of a glass-melting furnace. It heats the raw materials to a temperature of about 1500 to 1700C. The raw material is then transformed through chemical reactions to molten glass. In industry, glass melting is achieved with gas, oil, or an electrically heated furnace. Small quantities of glass include batch melting in pots or dry tanks.

The mould material is then removed after the metal has solidified upon cooling. A foundry furnace provides the necessary housing where metal material is melted. In steelworks, two of the primary types of furnaces are blast furnaces and electric arc furnaces. A blast furnace is a metallurgical furnace involving supplying or combustion air above atmospheric pressure.

Lime Kilns

Lime kilns are a type of stone furnace that helps to render limestone (calcium carbonate) into quicklime that’s a form of lime. The process is termed calcination of limestone. In typical furnaces, the reaction takes place at around 900C° to 1000C°. The quicklime is used for making plaster or mortar for construction projects.
